Entrepreneurship and its Effect on Mental Health

According to research, studies show that :

  • 29% of entrepreneurs experienced ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)

  • 27% of entrepreneurs suffer severe Anxiety

  • 30% of entrepreneurs are struggling with Clinical Depression

An entrepreneur is described as someone who passionately and creatively pursues an idea from concept to actualization as a result of a discovered need or challenge in the market. In the words of Steve Jobs: "The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do."

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health is not merely the absence of mental health challenges. It is the “state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”.

72% of entrepreneurs are directly or indirectly affected by mental health issues compared to just 48% of non-entrepreneurs. That’s according to a study by the National Institute of Mental Health. 49% of entrepreneurs deal with mental health issues directly while only 32% of others experienced them.

As humans, we like to create an illusion of certainty to manage our anxiety around our ultimate powerlessness. Thus we're susceptible to higher levels of uncertainty, anxiety, and responsibility for what's truthfully out of our control. Over time, the stress leads to sleepless nights, overworking, and lack of appetite or skipping meals due to work and the problems keep spilling over, which can lead to depression if the stress is not addressed well on time.

Entrepreneurship comes with its own set of up and down. When at the initial stage, the common mistake we all make is isolating ourselves and we feel isolated when no one is supporting us because of the choices we are making. This pushes us to further loneliness as we have no one around us.

Always remember to breathe and take out time to rest and rejuvenate physically, spiritually, and mentally.
